The week’s film, When the Mountains Tremble, https://weta.org/watch/shows/pov/when-mountains-tremble
tells the story of the Mayan peoples, Quecha speakers, during the vicious Guatemalan repression of the 1980s in which as
many as 200,000 indigenous people were murdered by the military. Much of the film is centered around the story of Rigoberta Menchu, a Mayan leader, who later was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Write a reflection about the film When the Mountains Tremble (1983) Make sure to state your opinion about Rigoberta’s decision to empower herself with the components of Western society that best fit her requirements.
I have attached a file of a supplemental readings which you should peruse as background for your comments on the film. Read the section called The Main Goals of U.S. Foreign Policy which runs to page 29. It will place the Guatemalan atrocities in a larger historical context.
