Roots is basically backstories of almost all the major characters, who will then grow, change, mature, and reap what is sown by the end of the novel. So, for the Roots section, the reading assignment is:
Choose one character presented in Roots. Post a character sketch of that character. Include at least 3 direct quotes from the novel in support of your post. Then explain why you chose that particular character.
What you are doing now is establishing a relationship with one of the characters, investing in that character, and investing in how the story progresses and ends up. In this way, you will ground yourself in your reading of the novel as a whole across the other three sections.
500 words including quotes + a follow-up response to another student’s post.
