Research Paper – Applied Media Analysis (25%)
This apex assignment of the course will require students to write a 7-8-page (~2,000 word) paper which critically examines a recent popular media piece (a newspaper or magazine article, a Twitter thread, a popular Instagram meme, a Vimeo or YouTube video clip, etc.) which in some way addresses a contemporary global event, issue, or concern that would be of interest to social-cultural anthropologists (lots of freedom with this assignment folks, so please feel free to get creative!).
The media analysis is an argumentative paper which means students are to either: (A) critique/disagree with elements of the authors’/filmmakers’/bloggers’/posters’ (etc.) perspective or to (B) amplify, build upon, and support it (i.e., agree with it).
The most important thing here is that students utilize recent (within the last 10-15 years maximum) social-cultural anthropological research to support their position. The paper must cite at least 5 academic (peer-reviewed) anthropological sources (mainly journal articles or book chapters from published ethnographies). The paper must also be double-spaced, 12pt. Times New Roman or Arial font, and should be written using Chicago Style for the Social Sciences as a citation and referencing method. It must be uploaded to Quercus as a Word or PDF document.
