PROMPT: You are welcome to post in reply to my questions (below), or on something completely different that you want to talk about, as long as it relates directly to Marie de France, Lanval, Chevrefoil, or the genre of chivalric romance. This channel will remain open for posting through Sunday, May 22.
You will have learned about the normal narrative structure of medieval romance from the headnote in the Norton Anthology and from my first video lecture on Marie. The basic idea is that stories in this genre follow a fixed pattern: they move from integration (community) to disintegration (exile) to reintegration (return).
Questions: to what extent do the two lais we read, Lanval and Chevrefoil, conform to this pattern? To what extent do they change or deviate from or subvert the pattern? You can talk about one or both of the lais, but be specific and use textual details to back up your ideas.
