Content: Effective literature analyses require a strong claim or thesis, a variety of evidence drawn from the text in support of that claim, and clear and abundant explanation that demonstrates the way in which the evidence supports the claim. A good claim takes an insightful yet debatable stance regarding a topic; that is, your thesis should avoid the commonplace or obvious and attempt to prove a point that others might well disagree with (before they read your convincing essay). Since your audience is this class, you can assume the reader is familiar with texts under discussion, though you may need to summarize portions that are relevant to your argument.
