Paper #1 – The Narrative Essay
DUE: JUNE 28 by 6:00PM
For your first graded essay assignment, you will be writing a narrative essay. In this essay, you will be describing your favorite vacation. This can be an actual vacation you have had, or you can make it up and write a fictional vacation. Include as many details as you can regarding your vacation.
1. Write a two-page essay (4-5 paragraphs, with at least 5 sentences in each paragraph).
2. Be descriptive. Think of words that involve the senses (sight, smell, sounds, tastes, textures, etc.)
3. Include details that make the time and place clear to your reader. When did you go? Why did you go then? Were you alone or with others? Who were they? Had you been there before? What is this place like? Where did you stay? Describe the place you stayed, what you did, and what you enjoyed most. How was the weather?‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌ Why did you choose to go there?
4. Use transition words, such as first, next, after, during, until, finally, etc. Your textbook has lists of transition words to choose from.
5. Be sure to check your punctuation. No comma errors!
6. Be sure to vary the length of your sentences. Have some short sentences, some compound sentences, etc.
7. Look over the grammar and punctuation rules we have covered so far this semester, and use those skills in this essay!
Remember, as much as you need to use descriptive words, this is still a narrative essay. You need to tell a story. Tell the reader about your vacation: Perhaps there was an event you went to that you really enjoyed, or maybe there was a conflict with a family member on the trip, or maybe you had an adventure one afternoon learning how to ski, or you met an interesting person. Tell the reader about your vacation, give them a story, and be descripti‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌ve.
